Leave Not Off Reading The Bible

Which is your experience?

On one hand, reading the Bible is a lot like eating fish. Every now and then we come across a bone that we can’t chew. We put that aside and eat those parts that we can. But then later after a little more walking with God through life experiences and discussion with others, even the ‘bones’ become nutritious to us.

“Leave not off reading the Bible till you find your heart warmed… Let it not only inform you, but inflame you.”

On the other hand, as Mark Twain said, “It ain’t those parts of the Bible that I don’t understand that bothers me, it’s the parts that I do understand.” In this case, it is usually because God is speaking to us through His word and calling us to obedience or trust. And we struggle with our desire to have control and do what we want to do instead.

Maybe both are your experiences. Whatever you have found as you read the Bible, take advice from Thomas Watson who said, “Leave not off reading the Bible till you find your heart warmed… Let it not only inform you, but inflame you.”
